1. Jeffery Simmons, DT, Mississippi State

The ACL injury that Jeffery Simmons suffered in training, on top of the unnecessary act of not inviting him to the combine, dropped the defensive tackle’s stock. But teams aren’t likely to shy away from him as a stash talent. The Cowboys, are one of the teams who should be willing to take the risk.

Simmons currently sits as a Day 1 prospect with big-time potential as a player who would have easily been mentioned among the top 15 players in the class. For the Cowboys, the situation is ideally similar to Jaylon Smith with less of a risk. He can redshirt his first year and make a big-time splash in 2020.

Getting after the quarterback is something Simmons can do. He has active hands and a non stop motor. Plus, he’s a natural at shooting the gap as a 3-technique. At the snap, he’s displayed a quick burst with a low center of gravity.

The Cowboys can afford to take this chance. They have some interior lineman that defensive coordinator Rod Marinelli can get the best out of. Maliek Collins played well down toward the end of the 2018 season. Tyrone Crawford is still under contract. And he looked solid ending the season with 5.5 sacks and 34 tackles. So a player like Simmons is a fantastic stash option that could pay huge dividends.
