Round 4, Pick 136 (Comp pick): Hunter Renfrow, WR, Clemson

Losing Cole Beasley in free agency stinks. He was a fan favorite and seemed to always come up with the play the Cowboys needed — and his final regulation catch will go down as one of the more clutch plays of his career as he hauled in what proved to be a game-winning fourth-down grab. As much as it hurs to watch him go, the truth is the front office made the right call considering how much Buffalo was willing to pay Beasley.

Making the departure less painful is the addition of Randall Cobb. The former Green Bay Packers receiver is playing on a one-year deal and is an upgrade over Beasley when healthy. Last season, Cobb wasn’t fully healthy which is likely the reason he signed just a one-year contract. The length of that deal protects the Boys should Cobb continue to struggle with health. It also doesn’t stop them from looking for their next slot machine in the 2019 NFL Draft.

For that, they turn to Hunter a Renfrow out of Clemson as they use their fourth-round compensatory pick on a player to groom behind Cobb. In four seasons for the Tigers, Renfrow brought in 186 receptions for 2,133 yards and15  touchdowns. Like Beasley with Dallas, Renfrow made his living in the slot for Clemson and was a huge factor on third downs.

He’ll have a similar role in Dallas, but asking a day three rookie to start right away isn’t ideal. That’s why the Cobb signing was so important. Renfrow will get a full season under his belt before the Cowboys begin to ask too much of him. This pick is all about getting better down the road and the results may not be fully seen until 2020.
