2019 NFL Draft: Detroit Lions 7-round 2019 mock draft 1.0
By Zac Snyder
Kyle Philliips played both inside and outside during his Tennessee career but showed more potential outside and that should be the case as he moves to the NFL as well given his size at 6-4 and 272 pounds. He brings some speed and length to the position but will have to refine his game more before he has an impact.
There are some tools to develop but it might take a redshirt at the NFL level as he works on his game and gets stronger. Phillips was a former four star recruit who hasn’t yet realized his full potential but may require a team with some patience to get there. He could be an interesting late round pick to work with during camp then look at as a practice squad candidate to keep the development going before he is ready for a spot on a 53-man roster.
If there is a pick I don’t feel totally confident will actually go in reasonable proximity to his position in this mock draft it’s Khari Willis. Mel Kiper Jr. has recently talked up Willis as a possible pick on day two and, while Kiper is not the be all-end all for evaluation, that’s a big gap.
The Lions clearly value the safety position and adding another to the mix through the draft figures to be a consideration, even much earlier than this. The pick here takes into account the way the team values the position and the value Willis represents in the seventh round.
As I said leading off, mock drafts are just for fun and meant for nothing more than exploring a scenario. There is no reason to get overly excited or upset about anything but if you see some things you like or don’t like, feel free to leave a comment below or find me on Twitter.
