Oakland Raiders: 7-Round 2019 NFL mock draft to start April
Based on last year’s offensive production, it’s clear quarterback Derek Carr meshes well with an athletic, big-body weapon in the seams and on the outside. Mayock and Gruden gift wrap another weapon for their signal-caller.
Although unlikely, tight end T.J. Hockenson fell to the Raiders at No. 24. Because he doesn’t play a premium position, it’s not an impossible scenario.
Cook signed with the New Orleans Saints during free agency, which creates a spot for a new starter at tight end in the upcoming season. Gruden spoke about Darren Waller‘s opportunity to take on a larger role, but it doesn’t amount to anything in April with arguably the best prospect at the position available in this slot.
Hockenson could match Cook’s pass-catching skills and provide more with his willingness to block. He can hold up against defenders on the edge and supplement pass protection if necessary.
At 6-5, 251 pounds, Hockenson ran a 4.7-second 40-yard time at the NFL Scouting Combine and looked terrific in the position drills. He’s going to become a matchup problem in the NFL upon arrival. Carr will have a refined talent at tight end to target in the passing game. Whereas Waller played wide receiver at Georgia Tech.
In 2018, Hockenson grabbed 49 receptions for 760 yards and six touchdowns; he led the Hawkeyes in receiving yardage. The standout tight end won’t have to become the focal point of the passing offense. Brown’s presence should help clear space for him downfield.
