Oakland Raiders: 7-Round 2019 NFL mock draft to start April
Gruden finally lands a dedicated slot wideout for the offense. At the combine, Greg Dortch tipped the scale at 5-7, 173 pounds and didn’t participate in the workouts because of a wrist injury. He had a decent performance at Wake Forest’s pro day, per Winston Salem-Journal‘s Conor O’Neill.
“Dortch said his 40-yard dash times were around 4.49 seconds and 4.52, which roughly lines up with unofficial times taken from the observation deck of McCreary Field House,” O’Neill wrote. “His times in the shuttle and three-cone drill reportedly were more impressive.”
Dortch would need to check two boxes for the Raiders. Does he possess enough speed to beat defenders on the inside? Can Carr trust his hands if he’s able to break free in the open field?
The Wake Forest product logged 142 catches for 1,800 yards and 17 touchdowns in two seasons. Dortch’s yards-per-catch average isn’t overly impressive, but he led the program’s pass-catching corps in receiving yards with two different quarterbacks (John Wolford and Sam Hartman) under center. The small-framed wideout routinely created separation and came down with catches as a reliable option in the passing game.
Ultimately, the offense needs a burner in three-wide receiver sets. When healthy, Dortch certainly answers that bell in that aspect and his pro day results confirmed it. Furthermore, the Wake Forest product could help this club in multiple phases of the game.
The Raiders may also take interest in Dortch’s kick-return skills; he scored on two punt returns during the 2018 campaign and averaged 21.5 yards per kickoff return for his collegiate career.
