Primarily attacking the defensive side of the ball in the 2019 NFL Draft certainly makes sense for the Kansas City Chiefs. They have obvious defensive needs and an impressive offensive unit that is likely to put up big scoring numbers no matter what they do the rest of the off season.

That being said, the NFL is an offensive league and every team would be wise to capitalize on an opportunity to improve their ability to score. With their first of two second round picks, the Chiefs select wide receiver Deebo Samuel, who is simply too strong of a value to pass up in this range.

Samuel struggled with injuries throughout his college career, but when he was on the field, he was consistently a dynamic playmaker. A smooth route runner who creates consistent separation against most defensive backs, Samuel simply knows how to get open. Whether it is on the outside or out of the slot, he can create space against man coverage and find the weaknesses of a defensive zone.

He is quicker than he is fast, consistently using great footwork and change of direction quickness to beat opposing defensive backs. He also showcases strong hands, catching the ball away from his body and getting upfield quickly to create yardage after the catch. On top of all that, Samuel showed impressive playmaking ability in the return game in college.

If he can stay healthy, Samuel will undoubtedly be an exciting playmaker at the next level. At worst, he will be a consistent and reliable option out of the slot who uses his quickness and route running skills to make plays in the short to intermediate range.

Honestly, the Chiefs do not need much on the offensive side of the ball, but they could certainly use some quality depth at the wide receiver position. Stick Samuel in the slot with Tyreek Hill and Sammy Watkins on the outside would make an already frightening offensive unit even more difficult to defend.
