Round 3, Pick 89: Renell Wren, DT, Arizona State

As the third round was coming to an end, I was looking at the team’s other positions of need, but I wasn’t in love with any of the prospects on the board. Ballard would likely prefer to add depth than reach for a player at a position of need.

In Rennell Wren, I was able to grab a player who isn’t the most proven in terms of numbered production, but he does have the athleticism to develop into a tantalizing player on the defensive line.

Wren has really good size at 6-5 and 318 pounds, and he was able to maintain the athleticism that made him recruited so highly despite that size. Wren only had three sacks in four seasons, but he did total 14.5 tackles for loss during that span. He showed flashes of potential that could allow him to develop into something more than just a rotational lineman, but that gives the ability to bring him along slowly in limited snaps.

The team grabbed two players that may not start in year one for them, but they both have the potential to be long-term pieces on this defense. Wren can pair with Simmons up the middles while the team adds some edge rushers in the future outside of them. If he’s able to fully tap into that potential that he has shown, the Colts will have a scary duo up the middle of their defense in front of Defensive Rookie of the Year Darius Leonard.
