Round 6, Pick 176: Oli Udoh, OT, Elon

Speaking of drafting for the future, starting left tackle Joe Staley is set to become a free agent after the 2019 season. He will be 35 years old at that time, and the 49ers may be looking to get younger along the offensive line and let their longtime blindside walk.

If that were to happen, it would be expected for last year’s first round pick Mike McGlinchey to swing to left tackle and a new right tackle would be needed. Why not draft a raw small-school prospect that has elite traits in need of molding? This is the case with Elon’s Oli Udoh.

Measuring in at 6-5.5 and 323 pounds, Udo continued to run an elite time in the 40-yard dash, with explosive 10- and 20-yard splits and graded as an elite athletic prospect. He has all of the athletic traits desired in an anchor on the offensive line, but needs his technique sharpened.

Here in the sixth round, the 49ers pick him up to prep for the potential departure of Staley after the season. This would give him a year to learn behind Staley and McGlinchey before eventually taking over the reigns in 2020 if San Francisco chooses not to retain their veteran left tackle.
