Chicago Bears: 7-Round 2019 mock draft in early April
By Randy Gurzi
With only five picks throughout the 2019 NFL Draft, the Chicago Bears will have to hit on all their selections to improve upon a successful 2018 season
After moving on from John Fox, the Chicago Bears decided to go a different direction with their head coaching hire. After three seasons of the defensive-minded Fox running the show, general manager Ryan Pace opted for an offensive guy as he selected former Kansas City Chiefs assistant Matt Nagy.
A former quarterback who never made it to a regular season NFL roster, Nagy spent his entire coaching career working under Andy Reid — beginning with the Eagles. After not making their roster in 2009 as a player, Nagy became a coaching intern and worked as a coaching intern in Philly. He then worked his way up to offensive quality control coach before moving to Kansas City with Reid in 2013.
There, Nagy was a quarterbacks coach for three seasons before replacing Doug Pederson as the offensive coordinator. Like Pederson, Nagy quickly became a head coach and quickly had success. Helped by the trade for edge rusher Khalil Mack, the rookie head coach went 12-4 and won the NFC North. He was also given the award for NFL Head Coach of the Year.
Moving forward, more will be expected out of Nagy and the Bears but it will take some great work out of Pace to give the coach a stronger roster. Thanks to trades in previous drafts, Chicago is without a selection in the first two rounds — and they have just five overall. That doesn’t mean they can’t find decent players and the following mock draft tries to accomplish that very feat for the Bears.
