Round 5, Pick 162: Mike Weber, RB, Ohio State

Ever since Matt Nagy came to Chicago, it seemed as though the Bears were willing to move running back Jordan Howard. One of the top runners in the NFL as a rookie, Howard missed the 1,000-yard mark for the first time in his three-year career in 2018. Still, he had a respectable 935 yards and nine touchdowns.

Despite his success, Chicago shipped him off as he’s now with the Philadelphia Eagles. With him gone, they’ll likely lean on Tarik Cohen more often but they do need someone who is capable of churning out the tough yards. That’s what leads them to use their fifth-round pick on Mike Weber.

The Ohio State product had an up and down career, but still managed 5.9 yards per carry for the Buckeyes. He ended his career with 2,676 yards rushing and crossed the goal line 24 times on the ground.

He could stand to improve as a receiver, but that’s an area where Cohen excels and will likely be on the field on third downs. Weber’s job would be more of a traditional back who runs between the tackles and keeps defenses honest. He does still possess enough speed to break off the occasional big play, which could go a long way for the Chicago offense that struggled at times in 2018.
