Jacksonville Jaguars: 7-Round 2019 mock draft in early April
By Larry Brake
Round 7: Jamal Peters, CB, Mississippi State
Jacksonville decides to add another cornerback in the seventh round. Jamal Peters is taken as the 236th overall pick. Peters played collegiately for four years at Mississippi State.
Peters is a big cornerback. He stands 6-2, weighing 220 pounds. Obviously, he is a candidate to play multiple positions as well as special teams. There is a possibility that Peters could move to linebacker to cover running backs out of the backfield. He is similar to Telvin Smith’s size and weight. Since the NFL is moving to a more passing style of league, Peters would fit that need for a hybrid type of defender.
Lance Zierlein of NFL.com gives his analysis of Peters, saying the following:
"… isn’t good enough to warrant anything more than later Day 3 consideration, but he’s a decent athlete and his size and length are rare commodities that zone-heavy teams will want to cultivate. He’s not made for consistent man coverage and if he struggles to develop in zone, he could get moved to safety. Peters has developmental potential in the right scheme, …"
Late round selections usually end up on a special teams squad. Jacksonville has a good defense which might be difficult to make the roster as a corner. A position change might suit him well as far as making the final roster
