Round 4, Pick 136: Dawson Knox, TE, Ole Miss

Another big storyline this offseason for the Cowboys has been the return of tight end Jason Witten. He retired following the 2017 season and took a job calling games for ESPN on Monday Night Football.

That went rather poorly for Witten as he was highly criticized for his work in the booth. As the season wore on, and the hate for his broadcasting chops increased, there were rumors that head coach Jason Garrett reached out to Witten about a return. That didn’t happen last season, but now it has.

More from Dallas Cowboys

Witten is expected to start but will be 37-years-old so he shouldn’t be counted on to play every snap. Instead, he will likely be a key figure on third-downs and will serve as a mentor to Dalton Schultz and Blake Jarwin — as well as any other rookie who they bring in.

In this 2019 NFL Mock Draft, that rookie becomes Dawson Knox out of Ole Miss. Knox is a pure projection pick as the athletic tight end didn’t put up huge numbers for the Rebels. He had just 39 receptions in his career and no touchdowns but still left with a year of eligibility remaining.

For Dallas, they bring him in as the understudy to Witten. He would push Rico Gathers out of a job and could leapfrog the other two young players unless they up their game some.
