Green Bay Packers: Ranking biggest team needs in 2019 NFL Draft
By Joe Kipp
1. Safety
After trading away long-time starter Ha Ha Clinton-Dix before the trade deadline last season, the Packers were left with a bare cupboard of options at free safety. The trade forced veteran cornerback Tramon Williams to transition to safety, who, at age 35, performed solid if not spectacular.
Clearly the Packers saw Williams as a short-term fix. He only started eight games at safety, providing a tentative band-aid on the situation. Green Bay promptly signed free agent safety Adrian Amos during the onslaught of free agency, a move that makes perfect sense for a team lacking depth at both strong safety and free safety.
According to PFF on Twitter, Amos lined up at free safety on 62.5 percent of his snaps last season, along with 58.7 percent of his snaps for his career. With the flexibility to play either position, Amos brings a diverse skill-set to defensive coordinator Mike Pettine’s defense.
That said, Green Bay still lacks depth at both safety spots. The team elected not to re-sign Kentrell Brice this offseason, leaving the following current players on the roster: Amos, Josh Jones, Raven Greene, Tray Matthews and Jason Thompson.
Luckily, the 2019 NFL Draft is littered with safety prospects. Darnell Savage, Chauncey Gardner-Johnson, Amani Hooker, Nasir Adderley, Taylor Rapp, Juan Thornhill, Johnathan Abram and Deionte Thompson are all early-round options for the Packers.
