Round 2: Irv Smith, TE, Alabama

Jacksonville gets Foles another weapon for the passing attack. Alabama tight end Irv Smith is taken as the 38th overall selection. Smith is a big play pass catcher. Smith stands 6-2, weighing 242 pounds, according to his combine results. He ran a 4.63-second 40-yard dash and bench pressed 225 pounds 19 times. Most of all, he can make plays on the field.

At Alabama, Smith played three seasons at tight end. He caught 58 passes for 838 yards with 10 touchdowns. Smith averaged 14.4 yards per reception. He moves the chains with each catch.

Charlie Campbell of Walter Football briefly gives a description of Smith’s talent and ability:

"He is a shifty route-runner with quickness down the seam, good hands, and the size to be dangerous after the catch."

Although Smith is shorter than Rob Gronkowski, he could be moved around in the passing scheme as Gronkowski was. His size would create an instant mismatch if he lined up in the slot. He would vertically stretch the secondary on seam routes upfield.

John DeFilippo loves using the tight end in his aerial assault. He and Foles would welcome Smith as a new addition into the receiving corps. Remember how DeFilippo used them in Philadelphia?
