Jay Gruden enters a crucial year as the Washington Redskins head coach. A nice haul in the 2019 NFL Draft could help him secure his future with the franchise.

The 2018 season for the Washington Redskins was a bit of a roller coaster ride. They entered the season with high expectations after making a significant change under center. Following three-straight 4,000-yard seasons (and two franchise tag designations) from Kirk Cousins, the Redskins elected to move on. Their new quarterback was Alex Smith, who they picked up in a trade with the Kansas City Chiefs.

They also added a potential No. 1 receiver in Paul Richardson during free agency and then landed running back Derrius Guice in the second round of the NFL Draft. Unfortunately, the three never got to play together as a torn ACL derailed the entire rookie season for Guice.

Washington still started out strong, with veteran Adrian Peterson coming to the Nation’s Capital and having a career resurgence. They jumped out to a 6-3 record and were in control of the NFC East before more injuries started to pile up.

For Richardson, it was a shoulder injury that sent him to the injured reserve. He ended up playing in just seven games for Washington and had only 20 receptions. A more concerning injury took Smith out as their franchise quarterback suffered a broken leg in just his 10th start with the franchise. With him out, Washington struggled and went 1-5 down the stretch.

Their inability to win without Smith puts a big target on the back of head coach Jay Gruden who now owns a 35-44-1 career record. He also will have a lot to prove in 2019 with Smith likely out for this season as well.

If Gruden hopes to get the job done and prove he should remain in D.C., he will need the front office to make some smart selections in the 2019 NFL Draft. With that goal in mind, we offer up a 7-round mock draft for the Redskins as they try and fill holes for this season while also building for the future.
