Round 3, Pick 76: Will Grier, QB, West Virginia

Right now, Case Keenum is the starter in 2019 and Alex Smith is expected to return the season after that. However, there’s no guarantee that he will be back to 100 percent health and even if he is, Smith will be 36-years of age that season. With that being said, Washington needs to start thinking about who will be under center from that point on.

This leads them to select Will Grier with their first of two picks in the third round. It may be tempting to go for a quarterback earlier, but the experience of Keenum keeps them from reaching — or making a massive move up in the first round.

Grier could end up being a great pick at this point even though the NFL Combine and Senior Bowl hurt his stock. Grier doesn’t have the best arm strength, but he’s smart with the football and is praised for his leadership ability. After a couple of seasons of grooming, he could end up being the answer as the Washington starter.

Round 3, Pick 96: Ben Powers, OG, Oklahoma

Just 20 picks after landing Grier, Washington is back on the clock. This time, they get some much-needed help for their offensive line by selecting Ben Powers from Oklahoma. A former junior college transfer, Powers started for three seasons with the Sooners. His best trait is his strength but Powers also has the technique to have a long career.
