Round 5, Pick 153: Tre Watson, LB, Maryland

Washington made a controversial move in 2018 to claim Reuben Foster, who was released by the San Francisco 49ers after he was arrested for a domestic violence issue. This wasn’t the only run-in for the 2017 first-round pick and there was backlash hurled at the Redskins for being willing to give Foster another chance.

More from NFL Draft

Now, the league has announced that Foster will not be suspended, so this move could end up paying off on the field. Even so, they would be wise to get someone to compete for the linebacker spot next to Foster while also offering up some needed depth.

They stay in-state for such a player as Maryland’s Tre Watson is the pick here. A former Illinois linebacker, Watson had 102 tackles in 2016 for them and then added 108 in 2018 for Maryland.

Round 5, Pick 173: Jimmy Moreland, CB, James Madison

With their second pick in the fifth round, Washington now adds to their defensive backfield with the selection of Jimmy Moreland from James Madison. He’s undersized and played for a small school but that doesn’t mean he can’t become a player in the NFL.

Moreland proved during his career to be quite the ballhawk. He ended his career with 18 picks — six of which he returned for touchdowns. He may start his career as a slot corner, but has the ability to play outside if needed.
