Round 6, Pick 190: Sheldrick Redwine, S, Miami (FL)

After waiting 70 selections from picks 120 to 190, the Vikings take a developmental safety prospect in Miami’s Sheldrick Redwine, who tested extremely well at the NFL’s Scouting Combine. The Vikings elected not to exercise Andrew Sendejo’s team option this offseason after Anthony Harris filled in admirably during Sendejo’s absence in 2018.

Harris was a restricted free agent this offseason but will be back with Minnesota in 2019 after the Vikings placed a second round tender on him. By drafting Redwine in the latter part of the draft, the Vikings create more depth at a position of strength (Harris and Harrison Smith). After all, you can never have enough depth in the secondary.

"“Aggressive, versatile safety who lacks consistency in coverage, but who possesses the ball skills and run support ability to challenge for a starter’s role in time. … He’s better suited in split-zone or down in the box and could become a key cog of the special teams until he gets his shot to start.” – NFL.com’s Lance Zierlein"

Redwine’s 40-yard dash (4.44 seconds), vertical jump (39 inches) and broad jump (130 inches) could propel his draft stock a but higher than the sixth round. That said, if he lasts until pick No. 190, Spielman could be tempted to take a shot on Redwine’s athletic profile. His appeal as a special teams contributor also plays favorably into this pick.
