Mike Edwards, S, Kentucky

As I mentioned before, Clinton-Dix could price himself out of Chicago. If the Bears decide that one year was enough, they need to have a contingency plan. They can pick up someone who provides depth in the position and who can challenge for a starting spot if one opens up. Mike Edwards can do just that.

Edwards is a smart, tough player. He has the size (5-11, 205 pounds) and athleticism to take on slot receivers. While he is an aggressive tackler, he is also disciplined enough to not overrun his target and let him slip away. He has the instincts to diagnose a play quickly and make a stop. He keeps his eyes on the quarterback while moving around and can anticipate throws and jump the play.

Edwards never missed a game in four years at Kentucky. He played in 51 games and started his last 44. He amassed 318 tackles (21 for loss), 10 interceptions (two touchdowns) and two forced fumbles. He started to receive some attention in 2016 when he intercepted Heisman Trophy winner Lamar Jackson twice in Kentucky’s upset over Louisville.

Edwards gives the Bears some flexibility. He could play in the box, could blitz, and play the slot. He provides good run support. Edwards had his Pro Day last week and did well. He ran a 4.5-40 and did his position drills well. He felt good about it and about his chances of getting picked (per WKYT):

"Feel like I put in a good 4-5 years here, but there is always going to be doubt and concerns. I understand, they put a lot of money into guys, but I feel like I showed what I can do. I feel like I showed enough. I feel like I did well and I was trying to impress some teams out there"

With all that said, he’s still considered a fourth- or fifth-round prospect. He could be a good pickup for the Bears late.
