Seattle Seahawks: 5 Prospects to avoid in 2019 NFL Draft
By Samuel Teets
Jeffery Simmons, DT, Mississippi State
Jeffery Simmons would easily go in the top half of the draft if he was healthy, but he tore his ACL back in February. ACLs aren’t the death sentence for athletes that they used to be, and we’ve seen plenty of players return from ACL injuries, but there’s no reason for Seattle to be the team to take that risk.
Yes, if Simmons comes back and is the great prospect every scout thought he would be, then he would be a steal in the late first round or even the second round if he falls that far. However, that’s a big “if”, and the Seahawks should focus on drafting guaranteed talents.
The Seahawks already have Jarran Reed at one of their two defensive tackle positions, but he’s up for contract after next season and current star edge rusher, Frank Clark, is holding out for a long-term deal. So, Seattle does technically have a need for offensive linemen and Reed really could use an interior running mate, but this draft is so loaded with defensive linemen that there’s no reason for the Seahawks to take the injured player.
I certainly hope that Simmons makes a full recovery and has a fantastic career in the league, but Seattle needs to make the simple decision. Picking Simmons seems risky and complicated, two things that the Seahawks don’t need in a draft pick.
