The Miami Dolphins have needs all across their roster. Of course, we want to look at schematic fits in a mock draft like this, but for a team like the Dolphins who pretty much need everything, simply sticking the board and taking the best available player is not a bad plan of attack. That is exactly what I do with Miami’s second-round pick, bringing wide receiver Deebo Samuel into the mix.

Samuel is one of my favorite wide receiver prospects in this draft class, showing smooth route running ability, impressive overall athleticism and the aptitude to consistently make catches in traffic.

His change of direction quickness is particularly impressive, showing the ability to snap in and out of cuts on a dime, often times leaving the defender in the dust. He plays fast all over the field, consistently creating separation between him and the defensive back trying to cover him. Samuel is also a dynamic playmaker with the ball in his hands, showcasing fantastic elusiveness in the open field and surprising power to finish runs.

Samuel is most effective in the short to intermediate range, using his quickness and elusiveness to create space out of the slot and create yardage after the catch. However, he does have the speed to be a dynamic deep receiver who defenses will have to pay attention to at the next level.

Samuel did struggle with injuries in college and that is obviously a concern. That being said, he is always going to be a playmaker when he is on the field. The Miami Dolphins find nice value with this pick. Assuming healthy, Samuel could come in and immediately be a contributor out of the slot and provide long-term upside at a position of need.
