2019 NFL Draft: 5 Teams that should trade down
1. Arizona Cardinals
Admittedly, it isn’t happening, but the Cardinals should definitely trade down from the No. 1 overall pick. Let’s start with the obvious reason: Last season, general manager Steve Keim traded up for Josh Rosen. Then, he hired Kliff Kingsbury to help take his offense to the next level, presumably with Rosen. So why not make sure that happens?
A plethora of teams is looking to make Kyler Murray their franchise quarterback. Both the New York Giants and Oakland Raiders have multiple first-round picks. Imagine trading with the Raiders, swapping spots and obtaining their pair of late first-round picks?
Imagine being able to add someone along the defensive line like Quinnen Williams at No. 4, upgrading at tackle at No. 24 with someone like Cody Ford and then upgrading the weapons for Rosen to throw to — and helping to replace Larry Fitzgerald — with someone like N’Keal Harry or J.J. Arcega-Whiteside with the 27th pick.
Moreover, a corner who excels in press man coverage like Amani Oruwariye fits well at the top of the second round. In that scenario, the Raiders surround Rosen with tools for success right away. Having consecutive top-10 picks at quarterback isn’t a smart move.
If it’s not a trade with Oakland that Arizona looks to make, then any team willing to trade the farm for the right to draft Murray work. Either way, it’ll help the Cardinals reach success at a faster rate than taking Murray themselves, and Steve Keim would come out looking like a genius if they were to trade down.
