NFL Draft: Re-drafting the star-studded 2014 NFL Draft
By Cory Kinnan
Original Pick: Taylor Lewan, OT, Michigan Wolverines
Bad news for the Tennessee Titans is that their original pick in Taylor Lewan flew off of the board with the No. 6 overall pick to the Atlanta Falcons, leaving them with a hole at the tackle spot once again. To recover from this loss, they select Jake Matthews out of Texas A&M, originally of the Falcons and complete a swap in this re-draft.
Tennessee still gets a great tackle in Matthews, but that is just a consolation prize after losing out on the ability to, once again, keep the rights to Lewan. Would the Titans’ offensive line be touted as one of the best, as it was in 2017, without Lewan? Could Matthews be able to play left tackle as Lewan does for the Titans?
These are all questions that do not have to be answered, as Lewan is thankfully in Tennessee. The fans of the Titans can take a deep breath knowing that they have one of the best offensive lineman in the league on their roster.
While drafting Lewan has led to just one playoff win, the ability to make the playoffs and advance cannot be placed on the shoulders of the offensive line. Adding Matthews instead of Lewan would not change this outcome.
However, it would be pretty cool to have the son of arguably the greatest player in franchise history in Bruce Matthews play on the Titans offensive line in Nashville. That being said, through five years of service, Lewan is the better of the two offensive tackles.
