221. Cortez Broughton, DT Cincinnati
The Cleveland Browns may not get immediate starters in the sense that they walk in and the job is theirs, but they get a bunch of role players that could become starters at some point shortly. The secondary gets a massive boost in response to the loss of Jabrill Peppers as well as how much the defensive line has been bolstered.
Juan Thornhill and Amani Oruwariye were selected with the belief they can be starters and that could come before the end of the season. In the mean time, those two along with Saquan Hampton, the Browns get a ton of options in how they want to cover opposing offenses.
The only two offensive players the Browns add are about depth now but could get significant roles in the near future. Max Scharping could be the team’s left tackle in 2020 and beyond while Miles Boykin could inherit the reps of receivers that may not be on the team next season.
Michael Dogbe and Cortez Broughton should provide an upgrade to the defensive line depth and see immediate playing time. They will have to earn their spots behind Larry Ogunjobi and Sheldon Richardson but they would have significantly more talent than any other defensive linemen on the roster behind those two.
Cody Barton could be the team’s SAM linebacker out of the gate. The Browns don’t appear to be a team that wants to be utilizing three linebackers often, but there will be certain teams and situations that need them to have that many. Barton can be a really athletic SAM that has the potential to add more responsibilities with time.
It’s unclear how much star power this draft would net the Browns, but almost every pick could see playing time in spots as a rookie, filling in various roles and just giving the Browns more versatility as a team. They will need some to grow into starters and impact players with time and as the Browns get closer to the Super Bowl, hopefully helping them win it. Now, let’s see how John Dorsey does it.
