2019 NFL Draft: Final complete 7-round mock draft as Kyler Murray still goes No. 1
By Randy Gurzi
17. New York Giants (via Cleveland Browns): Montez Sweat, EDGE, Mississippi State
The New York Giants are on the clock for the second time in the first round, with this pick coming courtesy of their trade with the Cleveland Browns, which cost them Odell Beckham, Jr. New York nets not only this pick but a third-round selection as well as starting safety Jabrill Peppers.
Adding Peppers helps the defense but is really just him taking over for Landon Collins who left in free agency for the Redskins. They also added Golden Tate in free agency, who takes the spot vacated by OBJ but there’s still one spot left vacant by offseason moves.
Before making the deal to send OBJ to Cleveland, the Giants and Browns participated in another trade that landed Kevin Zeitler in New York but sent Olivier Vernon away. Vernon’s spot is filled here by Montez Sweat who excelled the past two seasons at Mississippi State after transferring from Michigan State.
Sweat does come in with some concern as he had an irregular heartbeat discovered at the Combine. Fortunately, this seemed to be of minimal concern as he was allowed to finish all drills. Team doctors will surely want to be consulted but it seems like he’s still going to be an early selection.
