One interesting thing about the 2019 NFL Draft is that the Lions could use a young cornerback to pair opposite Darius Slay and there are prospects from three different Michigan schools they could look to fill that spot.

This mock draft series kicked off with Michigan State’s Justin Layne in the second round and here we have Central Michigan’s Sean Bunting in the third round. Former Michigan Wolverines corner David Long hasn’t made an appearance in this series but would also warrant consideration from the Lions as soon as Day 2.

In addition to being a local prospect, the Lions should be very familiar with Bunting because John Bonamego is back with the Lions as the special teams coach. Bonamego had been the head coach at Central Michigan the last four seasons.

The immediate thing to like about Bunting is his combination of size and athleticism. Standing just over 6-0 and weighing in just under 200 pounds, Bunting has the size that will appeal to the Lions and he completed the pre-draft drills as an above average athlete across the board.

Bunting isn’t just a physical specimen, however. He shows good awareness and ball skills in coverage. He intercepted nine passes during his three years playing for CMU, including a career-high five as a redshirt sophomore in 2017.

The Lions may be able to tread water at corner with what they did earlier in the offseason to give Bunting some time to adjust and grow into a bigger role later in the season or by year two.
