Round 1, Pick 30: Chauncey Gardner-Johnson, S, Florida

Is Chauncey Gardner-Johnson going to fall this far? I’m not sure. If he does though, Green Bay should be skipping all the way to the podium to turn this pick in. CGJ presents the ideal combination of speed, athleticism and coverage ability that the Packers will be looking for opposite the recently acquired Adrian Amos.

Gardner-Johnson showed the ability to cover slot wide receivers while being able to stay tight with opposing tight ends. That skill is something Green Bay has sorely missed.

Johnson got better every year in college. He also got better at playing close to the line of scrimmage. He increased his total tackles for a loss every year from 0.5 to six and finally nine. His ball skills weren’t too bad either with nine interceptions and 12 pass breakups over three seasons. That type of playmaking ability hasn’t been on the back end for Green Bay since Charles Woodson went back to the Oakland Raiders.

Another solid option at this spot is Delaware’s Nasir Adderley, but this was our dream scenario. CGJ would be an ideal fit for defensive coordinator Mike Pettine’s scheme, and he would be able to move around to throw more complex looks at opposing quarterbacks. With their first two picks, Green Bay has made their defense one of the best groups on paper that they’ve had in a long time.
