Oakland Raiders: 3 Surprise options for the No. 4 overall pick
OL Jonah Williams, Alabama
Oakland selected offensive tackle Kolton Miller with the 15th overall pick in the last draft. He played through a Grade II MCL sprain and reinjured his knee during his rookie campaign but struggled when healthy. The UCLA product allowed a league-high 16 sacks and the second-most pressures (65), per Pro Football Focus (subscription required).
According to Tafur, Miller added bulk during the offseason and weighs close to 330 pounds. “I have been training with Dan Jameson at Boss MMA in Roseville,” he said. “I am close to 330 pounds right now and bench and my squat have gone up.”
Miller’s size should help him handle bull rushes and power pass-rushers in the trenches. On the opposite side, the Raiders have Trent Brown, another 6-8 offensive tackle who weighs 380 pounds. The massive bookend perimeter blockers should seal the edges for years to come.
Where does Jonah Williams fit into the Raiders front line? There are draft analysts who think the Alabama offensive tackle has a shot to play guard in the pros, including NFL Network’s Daniel Jeremiah (h/t NJ.com’s Ryan Dunleavy). “He can play tackle. He can be a Pro Bowler inside at guard.”
Pro Football Weekly’s Greg Gabriel, who’s a former NFL scout, cites Williams’ short arm length (33 5/8 inches) as a potential reason for a move to guard. “When he gets to the NFL, he is going to be playing against long-armed guys almost weekly, which is why I feel he might be better off moving inside to guard at the next level,” he wrote.
Raiders offensive line coach Tom Cable isn’t afraid to experiment with his personnel. Under his tutelage, James Carpenter (drafted in 2011) and Justin Britt (drafted in 2014) made the transition from collegiate tackles to interior linemen with the Seattle Seahawks.
At 6-6, 302 pounds, Williams doesn’t have the ideal size for a typical offensive guard expected to handle penetrating defensive tackles, but he uses his hands and sets a strong base in pass protection. With Miller at 330 pounds, don’t rule out a potential shuffle up front.
Remember, the Raiders traded Kelechi Osemele to the New York Jets, which created a void at left guard. If the coaching staff views Williams as an asset on the interior, he could be a viable target at No. 4.
