2019 NFL Mock Draft: Redskins, Patriots trade up in at-the-buzzer projection
7. Jacksonville Jaguars: Jawaan Taylor, OT, Florida
Nick Foles‘ massive contract with the Jacksonville Jaguars likely takes them out of the quarterback conversation with the No. 7 pick — and if that doesn’t, the fact that three quarterbacks went in the first six selections almost surely does. The good news for those Duval faithful is that it really forces the Jaguars’ hand to take a player that will better serve their entire roster moving forward as they nab Jawaan Taylor.
Some might say that the Jags don’t direly need an offensive tackle with Cam Robinson and Will Richardson in tow, but Taylor is likely a better option than either of those players. The Florida product is an imposing force with all the size and length you want, but he’s also developed immensely in terms of footwork and technique over the past year. If they can continue that development, the Jaguars will have found a long-term option at tackle to pair with either Robinson and Richardson on the edges.
8. Detroit Lions: Josh Allen, EDGE, Kentucky
With Ezekiel Ansah now out the door and still testing the free agency waters, the Detroit Lions find themselves needing help at edge rusher. Yes, they signed Trey Flowers to a massive contract in free agency, but that still only gives them one proven player on the edge. They need someone else who can make an impact and, simply put, not allow Flowers to get singled out in the way that Ansah was when healthy in Detroit.
That’s where Josh Allen will come in. While some would argue he’s best-suited for a 3-4 edge rushing position, the Kentucky product has enough size, burst and strength to get down in the Lions’ 4-3 scheme and make an impact opposite of Flowers. Allen is arguably a top-10 talent that falls to No. 8 here, but the Lions take advantage of that with this pick.
