2019 NFL Mock Draft: Redskins, Patriots trade up in at-the-buzzer projection
17. New York Giants (via Browns): D.K. Metcalf, WR, Ole Miss
Offensive tackle, edge rusher, linebacker, cornerback — these needs all need to be addressed by the New York Giants in the 2019 NFL Draft after they land a quarterback, which they did with Daniel Jones at No. 6. However, the Jones pick leaves me with little faith that general manager Dave Gettleman will make the smart pick. Thus, in a bit of irony, they use the pick acquired in the Odell Beckham Jr. trade to try and replace the superstar wide receiver.
D.K. Metcalf is the pick and represents one of the biggest boom-or-bust prospects in the 2019 draft class. The Ole Miss product has injuries, poor agility testing and a perceived lack of production hanging over him, but he also has tremendous physical gifts with size, speed and strength that make scouts projecting his potential salivate. The Giants bank on those traits and get Jones a big-bodied weapon on the outside to grow with.
18. Minnesota Vikings: Garrett Bradbury, IOL, NC State
If the Minnesota Vikings do anything short of addressing their shortcomings on the offensive line in the first round, there may be a riot in Minneapolis. After investing $84 million guaranteed in Kirk Cousins last offseason, the Vikings failed to protect their investment by putting the quarterback behind an abysmal unit that would allow pressure if hit by a light breeze. Garrett Bradbury from North Carolina State can change that.
Bradbury is a supreme athlete for an interior offensive lineman, posssessing great foot speed and agility, in addition to being able to play both guard and center at the NFL level when you look at his traits. He would come in and be able to start immediately for Minnesota, addressing their most glaring need — or at least starting to as he should not be the only offensive lineman that the Vikings tab in this draft.
