Washington Redskins select Dwayne Haskins: Grade, reaction for 2019 NFL Draft
By Hunter Noll
The Washington Redskins had the 15th overall pick in the 2019 NFL Draft and, with that pick, they managed to steal Ohio State quarterback Dwayne Haskins.
The Washington Redskins entered the 2019 NFL Draft with a lot of needs. The biggest of that was quarterback, however. Due to that, many believed they would have to trade up to get the man they wanted. However, the Redskins decided to take the patient approach. They sat at No. 15 and got their man – Dwayne Haskins.
This selection absolutely gets an A+ grade. Haskins was my No. 1 quarterback heading into the NFL Draft. I was 100 percent sure that, if the Redskins were to get Haskins, they would need to trade up into the top five to grab him. Somehow though, he fell all the way down to the 15th pick and they got the quarterback with the most arm talent in the entire draft.
This immediately accelerates the rebuild of the Washington Redskins. They now have a legitimate franchise quarterback, something they’ve rarely even had a chance at since before 2000.
Even if the Redskins had to trade up to get him, that pick would’ve earned them an easy “A” grade. The fact that Washington didn’t have to trade up for Haskins makes this possibly the best pick of the draft — yes, I’m that high on him.
Pairing Haskins with Derrius Guice to be the future of this offense is just scary for every other NFC East team. Two young studs that can grow together for years to come. The Redskins have had a miserable history with quarterbacks in the 2000s. Haskins is here to finally change all of that.
Feel free to call this an overreaction, but this is the best pick of the first round of the 2019 NFL Draft so far. As early as the afternoon on draft day, many believed he’d be a top-five pick. No one thought he’d fall all the way to No. 15.
The Washington Redskins just managed to get their franchise quarterback ther without having to trade away any other picks. They can use them to get Dwayne Haskins his weapons for the next decade. Washington Redskins football just got fun again.
Final Grade: A+
