Dallas Cowboys: 5 Draft targets still on board for Day 2
By Randy Gurzi
Director of player personnel Stephen Jones wasn’t a fan of sitting out the first round and also said that doing so makes getting their second-round pick right that much more important. Jones also highlighted the need for a player who can come in and contribute immediately for the team — which makes it seem logical to assume that they would like to find a new three-technique defensive tackle.
Over the past couple of seasons, they were holding out hope that David Irving could fill this role and for a stretch in 2017 that appeared to be the case. Irving racked up seven sacks in just eight games, but then he completely disappeared in 2018 and is now indefinitely suspended — he also said he’s done with the NFL due to their anti-marijuana policy.
Even without Irving in 2018, the Cowboys defense was better than it had been in years. The addition of Robert Quinn makes it seem even more likely they’ll continue their strong play, but adding someone to upgrade the interior would be even better. This is where Zach Allen from Boston College comes in.
Allen played defensive end for the Golden Eagles but has the perfect frame to slide inside for Dallas (6-4, 281 pounds). Doing so would also be beneficial to him as his testing numbers weren’t great for edge players in the NFL.
What Allen would bring to Dallas is a workhorse mentality and a knack for stuffing the run. His get off is insane and moving inside would make him an even better option as a pass rusher. This is a guy who could be a day one starter, which would make Jones and company very happy.
