For years it feels as though the Cowboys have undervalued the safety position but there’s finally a shift in the wind in that regard. Stephen Jones has openly discussed the need there and then the team backed that talk up by dedicating six of their 30 pre-draft visits to the position. On top of this, they even went out and signed George Iloka to a one-year contract to try and protect themselves just in case they can’t find a player they want in the draft.

Hopefully, this means they will finally spend a decent draft pick on a natural safety (not a corner they try and convert as was the case with Byron Jones) who can come in and improve the back end of their defense. And one player who they did visit with that could be an instant upgrade is Virginia’s Juan Thornhill.

As mentioned earlier, the Cowboys need players who can get the ball back for their offense and that’s something Thornhill can do. He had six interceptions for the Cavaliers in 2018 and 13 for his career. He’s more than just a cover guy though as Thornhill has no issues coming up and helping in run support.

In addition to his play on the field, Thornhill tore up the Combine. He ran a 4.42-second time in the 40-yard dash and added 21 bench reps as well as an impressive 44-inch vertical jump. Should he be available at 58, this could be the game changer the defense needs. It also doesn’t seem to crazy to consider moving up to ensure they get their guy.
