12. Green Bay Packers: Rashan Gary, DL, Michigan

Grade: D+

I just do not understand the Rashan Gary hype. Sure, he is athletic and can make some splash plays, but he simply rarely showed up in college. Taking a shot on his upside late in the first round would not have been too bad, but at No. 12? I am just not a fan.

Gary has freakish athleticism for a man of his size. He can get off the ball quickly and has some upside as a one-gap penetrator. He converts from speed to power well and shows impressive natural strength in the middle of the field.

The traits are there and he flashes impact playmaking, but Gary simply is not consistent enough on the field. He takes too many plays off, often times being happy to simply engage the offensive lineman and stick at the line of scrimmage. He does not shows impressive natural instincts and struggles to diagnose run vs. pass.

Gary also shows inconsistent hand usage against the run, lacks much of a pass rush repertoire and does not get proper pad level on a consistent basis. I understand the Packers going defensive line here, but taking Gary over guys like Christian Wilkins and Brian Burns is absolutely insane to me.
