2019 NFL Draft: Grades for every first-round pick
21. Green Bay Packers: Darnell Savage, S, Maryland
Grade: B+
The Green Bay Packers get aggressive here, trading up from number 30 to take Maryland safety Darnell Savage. In the trade, the Packers send the Seattle Seahawks the 30th pick and two fourth-round selections in the 2019 NFL Draft.
Savage was a bit of a late riser, but do not discount his ability at the next level. Savage tested extremely well, running a 4.36-second 40-yard dash at the combine and shining in the athletic drills. He is a fantastic athlete who undoubtedly has massive upside at the next level.
Personally, I see Savage as a deep coverage safety at the next level. He has big-time range on the back-end and shows impressive ball skills. He is not the most physical player at the point of attack, but he can attack in the box quickly and shows the ability to tackle in space.
Safety was not the biggest need for Green Bay, but they were not exactly loaded back their either. Savage will have an opportunity to come in and learn. If shows that he is great to go right away, great. If not, the Packers can afford to only play him in certain situations.
With his athletic profile and playmaking skills on the back-end, Savage is an ideal safety for the modern NFL and has massive upside at the position going forward.
