2019 NFL Draft: Grades for every first-round pick
23. Houston Texans: Tytus Howard, OT, Alabama State
Grade: C+
The Houston Texans were known to love Andre Dillard. He appeared to be their top choice at number 23, but they were sniped by the Eagles who traded up just ahead of them and took Dillard. The Texans offensive line needs work all over the place. Left tackle was an obvious need, but they could legitimately use improvements across all five positions.
The Texans decided not to trade up for Dillard and it backfired on them. On top of that, I am not a huge fan of how they adapted.
Tytus Howard is a quick and athletic offensive tackle prospect who fits the Texans’ offense well. He can move in space, mirrors well in pass protection and has the overall mobility that fits perfectly with a mobile quarterback like Deshaun Watson. I like Howard’s upside, but his lack of functional strength and overall technique at the position is obvious. He is undoubtedly a project player who needs some time to develop. The Texans need to be able to protect Watson right now.
To be fair, offensive line was their biggest needs and it is not like there were a ton of sure-fire options available. That being said, both Cody Ford and Kaleb McGary would have been better picks here, providing the ability to come in and make an immediate impact for this team.
Howard is a talented guy and the Texans may have found their franchise left tackle. But he is not ready to compete right now and that is bad news for Watson and company.
