2019 NFL Draft: Grades for every first-round pick
26. Washington Redskins: Montez Sweat, EDGE, Mississippi State
Grade: A
The Indianapolis Colts traded out of the first round, picking up a second round pick this year and next from the Washington Redskins in exchange for No. 26. Colts general manager Chris Ballard loves having extra draft capital and he sets himself up with more in this trade. However, the Redskins are the team that ends up as winners here, as they trade up for Mississippi State edge rusher Montez Sweat.
Sweat is one of the most exciting defensive prospects in this draft class, showing a great combination of length, quickness and athleticism on the edge. He is an extremely explosive player who can bend around the edge with ease and create consistent pressure from the outside.
Sweat did slip a bit in the NFL draft due to a heart issue that clearly had some teams concerned. However, the issue was known about at the combine and he was still allowed to compete. The heart problem is obviously a concern, but he is worth taking a chance on in this range.
Edge rusher is a huge need for Washington and they fill it in a big way here. Adding both Haskins and Sweat in the first round is a dream scenario for this team. With a little luck, the Redskins may have turned their fortunes around on Thursday night.
