2019 NFL Draft: Grades for every first-round pick
30. New York Giants: Deandre Baker, CB, Georgia
Grade: B+
Compared to their other first-round selections in the 2019 NFL Draft, this one is a homerun for the New York Giants. At number 30, the Giants traded back into the first round, sending the 37th, 132nd and 142nd picks to the Seahawks for the 30th pick. With their third first-round pick, the Giants took Georgia cornerback Deandre Baker.
The first cornerback off of the board in the 2019 NFL Draft, Baker could quickly become a major contributor for the Giants. He is an impressive press cornerback who is tough at the line of scrimmage and shows quick feet throughout the play. Baker mirrors in man coverage extremely well, showing loose hips and good technique at all times.
He is an extremely competitive player who will fight for the ball in the air and he has the athleticism to win many 50/50 battles. Baker also shows impressive burst to close on routes, commonly baiting quarterbacks into making a bad decision as he quickly breaks on the ball and makes a play.
Baker is undoubtedly one of the most talented cornerbacks in the 2019 NFL draft class and should grow into a strong player at the next level. The Giants did not do much right on Thursday night, but I do not have any issues with this trade up and pick.
