2019 NFL Draft: Grades for every first-round pick
4. Oakland Raiders: Clelin Ferrel, DE, Clemson
Grade: C
Well, this was the first shocker of the night. The Oakland Raiders surprised everybody when they turned in the card for Clemson defensive end Clelin Ferrell, making him their selection with the fourth overall pick in the 2019 NFL Draft. The Raiders entered this draft with an obvious need at edge rusher but did not take the prospect that many of us expected.
Ferrell is a good player who is probably the best true 4-3 defensive end in this NFL draft class besides Bosa, but taking him at four is a reach. Ferrell was a consistent performer in college, has ideal size and length for the position and has a safe floor at the next level. That being said, his overall movement ability is extremely limited.
Ferrell is sluggish off of the ball and does not show great agility or change of direction ability. His ability to bend around the edge is extremely limited and severely limits his upside at the next level.
On a positive note, Ferrell does play the run well, using his hands extremely well and keeping strong leverage at the point of attack. He can make some plays in the backfield and does set the edge well.
Overall, Ferrell is a solid player who has a safe floor at the next level. He is going to be a competent starter who fits their 4-3 defense well. That being said, this is a reach. Taking a player with this limited of a ceiling is a mistake, especially with guys like Josh Allen and Devin White still on the board.
