6. New York Giants: Daniel Jones, QB, Duke

Grade: F

I still cannot believe that the New York Giants did it. Quarterback is obviously a need for this team with Eli Manning being well past his prime. That being said, in no way, shape or form should Daniel Jones have been the sixth overall pick in the 2019 NFL Draft. First, they traded Odell Beckham and now they take Jones at six? Rough offseason for Giants fans.

Jones is not a complete bum. He is a smart quarterback who understands football well and shows good pocket presence. He also shows solid accuracy in the short-to-intermediate range and good mobility for a quarterback. However, he simply benefitted far too much from his offensive scheme in college.

Duke’s head coach David Cutcliffe is known as a quarterback guru and he consistently put Jones in situations to succeed. Cutcliffe created opened up consistent throwing lanes for Jones with unique RPO and play action concepts, making his life easy in college. He simply did not show the ability to throw deep in college and was not particularly impressive in an offensive that made life easy.

I am still a look shook about this pick. Passing on guys like Josh Allen and Ed Oliver to take Jones is simply unacceptable. Dave Gettleman messed up in a big way here and this franchise is going to suffer because of it.
