2019 NFL Draft: Grades for every first-round pick
8. Detroit Lions: T.J. Hockenson, TE, Iowa
Grade: A
I really like this pick for the Detroit Lions. Matthew Stafford is not getting any younger and if the Lions expect to compete in the NFC North anytime soon, they simply need to surround him with more playmakers on the offensive side of the ball. They do just that by taking Iowa tight end T.J. Hockenson with the eighth pick of the 2019 NFL Draft.
Hockenson is a rock-solid offensive playmaker who is not going to bust at the next level. This guy is as safe as it gets and will come in and be a real offensive asset for the Lions. He is a true playmaker in space, showing legitimate upside as a vertical threat in the middle of the field. He is also a strong route runner who shows reliable hands and can catch in traffic.
Hockenson is a talented receiver at the tight end position who is going to put up numbers at the next level. On top of that, he is an elite blocker for his position who can absolutely dominate in the run game and protect the passer when asked to do so.
With Kenny Golladay and Marvin Jones on the outside, Hockenson will have space to operate in the middle of the field with Detroit. He is an extremely reliable player who can come in and make an immediate impact and provide some long-term upside. It is fair to question the positional value here, but Hockenson is a stud who fits well. I like this pick.
