Dallas Cowboys: Grading every 2019 NFL Draft pick
By Randy Gurzi
Not a bad pick at 218 in terms of the value. Mike Weber is a fast running back and he actually took over for Ezekiel Elliott after he left for the NFL in 2016. The problem is, they just drafted a running back and the ceiling for Weber seems to be an RB3 according to Lance Zierlein of NFL.com.
"“Adequately skilled runner with decent size who can get what is blocked but is unlikely to find his own yards often enough at the NFL level. Weber does a nice job of spying second-level linebackers and making lane choices relative to where the defensive flow is headed. However, even when he sees it, he struggles to access enough acceleration to rip past the first two levels of tacklers. He can make the initial tackler miss but doesn’t string moves together effectively. He could have a career cap as a RB3.” — Zierlein, NFL.com"
Dallas has had some decent drafts in recent seasons because they come in with a plan. Focusing more on running back than safety — a constant sore spot for them — shows a lack of a plan.
At pick No. 241. the Cowboys made their final pick in the 2019 NFL Draft. Their selection was Oregon EDGE Jalen Jelks, which was the second defensive end they added during the weekend. Jelks is another player who fits the exact build Dallas loves on defense. He’s tall and long — very long.
Jelks was better as a junior for Oregon when he had seven sacks. In 2018, he dropped in that department but still was a productive overall player. He needs to add bulk to make it in the NFL, but with a pick this late, it’s all about adding a guy who has developmental traits, which he has.
