Green Bay Packers: Grades for every 2019 NFL Draft pick
By Joe Kipp
Round 2, Pick 44: Elgton Jenkins, G/C, Mississippi State
Grade: B+
The Packers certainly have a type when seeking out offensive linemen. Athletic, versatile players who can play nearly anywhere on the line is a huge part of the formula. Elgton Jenkins started games at center, left guard, left tackle and right tackle while at Mississippi State.
Green Bay clearly views Jenkins as a player who can fill-in anywhere. “His versatility is exceptional. He’s a big, long man with excellent power. He’s been a good player in the SEC for about three years now,” said Brian Gutekunst. Jenkins only allowed three sacks during his entire college career.
Jenkins should compete for a starting job at either left or right guard. I have a hunch Lane Taylor’s job isn’t safe at left guard, especially with the signing of Billy Turner this offseason. Turner is the favorite to be the starter at right guard.
Jenkins was a solid pick considering the fit, need and value. Some may view him as a “reach” considering the other players on the board at the time, but Green Bay knew what they were getting. This pick gets an above average grade of B+.
