Green Bay Packers: Grades for every 2019 NFL Draft pick
By Joe Kipp
Round 6, Pick 194: Dexter Williams, RB, Notre Dame
Grade: A
The Packers needed another running back to add to the tandem of Jamaal Williams and Aaron Jones. They did just that, drafting the dynamic Dexter Williams out of Notre Dame. From a value standpoint, this was a home-run selection by Gutekunst and the front office. Like Ka’dar Hollman, the Packers had a pre-draft visit with Williams, so it makes sense he was the selection.
Williams was one of the most dynamic running backs in college football last year. He produced seven runs of over 30 yards, including a 97-yard touchdown. He finished the 2018 season with 158 carries for 995 yards and 12 touchdowns, averaging a whopping 6.5 yards per carry and 110.6 yards per game. Williams ran a 4.57-second 40-yard dash at the NFL Combine.
The addition of Williams solidifies Green Bay’s running back depth chart. He figures to be a solid rotational player who could be a dark horse to take over the starting role. Additionally, Jones hasn’t exactly been the pinnacle of health over his two seasons as a pro, suffering three separate knee injuries during that time. Williams adds a nice insurance policy.
Williams fits the zone-blocking scheme head coach Matt LaFleur wants to run. Coupled with where the Packers got him in the draft, this selection gets a solid A.
