Green Bay Packers: Grades for every 2019 NFL Draft pick
By Joe Kipp
Round 7, Pick 226: Ty Summers, ILB, TCU
Grade: B+
The Packers filled another need at inside linebacker with their last pick of the draft, selecting TCU’s Ty Summers. Like very other pick in this year’s draft, Summers has elite athleticism. He’s still raw as a prospect, but what can you expect from a seventh-rounder? Summers has the potential to be a solid special teams contributor with the upside to fill in as a coverage linebacker in dime packages.
Summers is exceptional at covering tight ends in space, making him an ideal pick for the Packers linebacking corps. At the NFL Combine, he ran a 4.51-second 40-yard dash, jumped 36 inches in the vertical leap and 123 inches in the broad jump. Additionally, he showed off his strength by benching 225 pounds for 27 reps.
NFL.com’s Lance Zierlein wrote in Summers’ draft profile that teams will likely view him as “a back-end depth” and “core special teamer”. That’s fine, since Green Bay doesn’t need him to be more than that — at least, at the moment.
Blake Martinez‘s contract expires after next season, so adding Summers makes a ton of sense. If the Packers can groom Summers for one year before letting Martinez walk away next year, this could be the ultimate value of the 2019 NFL Draft. Because of the upside, fit, need and athletic profile Summers presents, this pick gets a B+.
