30 greatest NFL team rivalries of all-time
By Dan Parzych
4. Kansas City Chiefs vs. Oakland Raiders
A few years ago, Derek Carr was considered to be one of the next best quarterbacks in the league with the Oakland Raiders before things took a step back the last two seasons.
In fact, Carr had previously made a case for being the top quarterback in the AFC West at the time. However, those honors clearly now belong to Patrick Mahomes after the Kansas City Chiefs star took home NFL MVP honors during his first full year as the starter.
After all the struggles from last season, there’s nothing Carr would love more than to help Oakland get back on the right track in 2019 by making the Raiders strong contenders again. The Chiefs aren’t going to make it easy for them.
But as great as the present is, it should be noted this rivalry really started to heat up back in the 1960s when the Raiders and Chiefs faced off in the AFL Championship in 1969.
Watching Kansas City go on to win that epic game in Oakland before beating the Minnesota Vikings later on for their first Super Bowl title gave the Chiefs an early edge in their rivalry with the Raiders, but unfortunately they haven’t won the big game since.
As for the Raiders, it took them a little longer to finally win their first Super Bowl, but at least they’re up on the Chiefs at the moment with three titles of their own.
