NFL Draft 2019: Biggest steal for each team
By Randy Gurzi
Detroit Lions head coach Matt Patricia had a less than ideal start to his career last season. He hopes to put that slow start behind him and has been part of a very fruitful offseason, as the Lions aim to do just that. Not only did the Lions land Trey Flowers in free agency, but they have now gone out and put together a solid draft class.
Their first pick was a potential star in Iowa tight end T.J. Hockenson. An all-around player, Hockenson will help at the line as well as in the passing game. As far as steals go, they had three candidates in defensive end Austin Bryant, safety Will Harris and cornerback Amani Oruwariye. In the end, it was the final of those three picks who gets the nod.
Oruwariye was considered a day two prospect, who had many people high on him due to his size and ability to turn the ball over.
"“Excellent size (6’2″, 205 pounds) with solid arm length (31⅜”) and good testing numbers across the board that confirm what the tape showed: a physical athlete all over the field. Seven interceptions in two years despite only starting in 2018; shows an attacker’s mentality that can routinely disrupt the catch point through all areas of the field.” —Matt Miller, Bleacher Report"
Oruwariye slid as teams may have worried about the Nittany Lions’ scheme masking some of his shortcomings. There were also those who didn’t think highly of his toughness. None of that feels like much of an issue for where Detroit ended up landing him. There may be some work to do, but this kid has a shot at becoming a starter quickly.
