Jace Sternberger. 75. player. Scouting Report. Pick Analysis. TE. Texas A&M. 49

The 2019 NFL Draft could have gotten very interesting had the Denver Broncos not moved in front of the Green Bay Packers to land Drew Lock. There were many rumors that had he still been on the board at No. 44, Green Bay would have taken the Missouri gunslinger.

They never did spend another pick on a quarterback, which means they weren’t just looking for anyone to groom behind Rodgers, but actually really liked Lock.

Rodgers surely wouldn’t have blown up publicly like Ben Roethlisberger did when the Steelers took Mason Rudolph last season, but it may have created some tension with him and rookie head coach Matt LaFleur.

But alas, we were all robbed of this storyline and the Packers ended up just making several really smart picks. The best of which was Darnell Savage out of Maryland. The talented safety should start alongside Adrian Amos right away and could complete the Packers’ secondary rebuild that has gone on for roughly three years now.

While Savage was their best pick, he wasn’t a steal. That honor goes to Texas A&M tight end Jace Sternberger, who they took at No. 75 overall. After transferring from Kansas, Sternberger played just one season for the Aggies and was sensational. He had 832 yards and 10 touchdowns, but his lone season of production led to him being around later in day three.

For the Packers, this could end their constant quest to overpay for tight ends. They gave out big money to Jared Cook in 2016, Martellus Bennett in 2017 and Jimmy Graham in 2018. None have lived up to the hype they brought, but Sternberger could finally give them that playmaker in the middle of the field they’ve been after for years.
