161. Pick Analysis. DE. Texas. Charles Omenihu. player. 10. Scouting Report

The Houston Texans came into this draft in desperate need of help on the offensive line. They aimed to address that by taking Tytus Howard out of Alabama State in the first round and Max Scharping in the second round. The Howard pick felt like a reach, but both players do have a shot at becoming fixtures on the line.

As for the steal for Houston, that came in the fifth round, when they landed Charles Omenihu out of Texas. He developed into a solid player by his senior season, recording 45 tackles and 9.5 sacks in that campaign. However, he seemed stuck between an end and tackle in some fronts, but has the kind of versatility to help as a pass rusher and run defender.

"“Omenihu brings a loaded toolbox to the table that makes him a versatile defender with inside/outside pass rushing and run defending upside. Showcasing continuous growth throughout his college career, Omenihu enjoyed the best season as a senior and enters the draft process playing his best football. Omenihu does have some size limitations when working inside and some tightness in the hips that present challenges on the outside, but his length, hand usage and effort serve as a strong foundation that should factor him into mix early in his career. By year three, Omenihu has the upside to be a versatile playmaker in a defensive front that is multiple.” — Joe Marino, The Draft Network"

Omenihu got to stay in state and will likely be highly motivated by his fall. Projected as a day two prospect, it was surprising to see him on the board this late.
