S. Virginia. Juan Thornhill. Scouting Report. Pick Analysis. player. 124. 63

It was hard to really pick a steal for the Kansas City Chiefs in the 2019 NFL Draft, but it wasn’t because they were making bad picks. Instead, they seemed to be drafting players very close to where they were projected to go.

Without a first-round pick, their first choice came at No. 56, where Mecole Hardman was chosen. They then landed Juan Thornhill at No. 63, who projects as a starting safety next to Tyrann Mathieu.

They also picked up Western Illinois defensive tackle Khalen Saunders as their third player in the top-100. There was another long stretch as they had no picks in the fourth or fifth round, but Kansas City made a good move at No. 214 when they took Darwin Thompson out of Utah State.

He may not be a huge name, but he will give them a great option to pair with Damien Williams, who came on strong at the end of 2018.

Looking back over it all, the biggest steal may end up being Juan Thornhill. He may not have been projected to go much higher, but Kansas City took a risk by not selecting him seven picks earlier. There seemed to be more risk going Hardman before Thornhill, but in the end, it ended up working out just fine.

Thornhill was an absolute ballhawk at safety for the Cavaliers, which is something the Chiefs hope he carries over to the NFL. A team in desperate need of help on defense, they may have put themselves over the top this offseason by re-making their safeties.
